The Bus

From all the different leadership theories I’ve explored so far, Jim Collins’ bus analogy is by far my favorite. The concept is simple, easy to understand, and easy to put into perspective and implement. You’re the bus driver and your company (or business, sports team, organization, or whatever you may be leading) is the bus. You have to figure out where you’re going, how you’re getting there, and most importantly who’s going with you. Always ask “First who, then what”.
Focusing on the people then the direction is a principle you must keep no matter how good or bad the circumstances are. As the bus driver, you start by:
Getting the right people on the bus – Invest time, energy, and money on hiring the right people. It will be the best investment you make in the long run. If there is any doubt on a candidate, do not let that person on the bus. Even if you must let the seat go unfilled for a period of time. The extra work you and your team will have to do while the seat is empty will prove worthwhile. This ensures that only the right people are stepping foot onto the bus and keeping them on the bus.
Getting the right people in the right seats – Not everyone will be in the right seat from the start. You let them on the bus for a reason. Before booting them off the bus because they’re not doing an exceptional job in their current seat, try them in another seat. Give them the benefit of the doubt that they are simply in the wrong seat; they may be a shining star in a different role.
Getting the wrong people off the bus – Once you’ve drawn the conclusion that the person is just not the right fit for the bus, get them off. Be rigorous, not ruthless. Help people exit with dignity to upkeep the positive feelings of your organization.
Put “who” before “what” – When hitting a pothole or going down a rough road, keep the “who” first. Do not fall into the trap of always asking “what” or “why”. Instead ask, “Who will handle this situation the best?” This goes the same for opportunities. Ask, “Who will make the most out of this opportunity?”
